lyrics

‘Twas Nineteen-Hundred Sixteen
In the time of the Great War
A man named James Connolly
Had a dream he bore

Well they marched in broad daylight
On that Easter Monday morn
They took the Dublin Post Office
On that day a nation was born

They cried “Hallelujah,
We are Irish and we are free.”
But the Lord Maxwell from his Dublin castle
said “It will never be.”

Well the British were none too happy
And they sent their infantry
And by Friday morning
They’d shot poor James Connolly

And he cried “Hallelujah,
We are Irish and we are free.”
But the Prime Minister from his London office
said “It will never be.”

The Post Office was taken back
And many Irish lives were lost
The British tied Connolly to a chair
And they shot him in the back

Yet he cried “Hallelujah,
I am Irish and I am free.”
But that Devil on his London Throne
Said, “It will never be.”

‘Twas Nineteen-Hundred Sixteen
In the time of the Great War
A man named James Connolly
Had a dream he bore

They sang “Hallelujah,
We are Irish and we are free.”
While God above from the Gates of Heaven
Said “You have to fight to be free.”

They sang “Hallelujah,
We are Irish and we are free.”
While God above from the Gates of Heaven
Said “You have to fight to be free.”

And they sang “Hallelujah,
We are Irish and we are free.”
While God above from the Gates of Heaven
Said “You have to fight to be free.”
